Reasons you might need an At Home ECG Holter Monitor

You may be advised to wear an Ambulatory ECG Heart Monitor if you experience symptoms that are sporadic or difficult to capture during a standard ECG.

Some common reasons include:

Heart Palpitations

Sudden sensations of your heart racing, fluttering, or skipping beats can be unsettling. Using an ECG Holter Monitor helps to assess whether these symptoms are linked to underlying conditions.

Irregular Heartbeats (Arrhythmias)

Conditions like atrial fibrillation (AFib) or ventricular tachycardia can cause abnormal rhythms that are sometimes unpredictable. Continuous monitoring increases the likelihood of detecting these irregularities.

Effects of Medication

Some medications can impact heart rate or rhythm. A Holter Monitor helps assess these effects, allowing healthcare providers to adjust prescriptions if necessary.

Post-Treatment or Surgery Monitoring

After a diagnosis or treatment for a heart condition, extended monitoring ensures the heart is functioning as expected.

Unexplained Dizziness or Fainting

Frequent episodes of light-headedness or fainting may indicate heart rhythm issues or other cardiac concerns, which the Holter Monitor can help identify.

Fast or Slow Heart Rate

Monitoring tachycardia (fast heart rate) or bradycardia (slow heart rate) over a longer period can help pinpoint patterns or triggers.

Monitoring Silent Heart Conditions

Some heart conditions, such as silent arrhythmias or ischaemia, may not cause noticeable symptoms but could still pose significant health risks. An ECG Holter Monitor can help detect these hidden issues, allowing for early intervention and treatment.

Chest Pain

While often linked to other causes, chest pain can also be a symptom of coronary heart disease or arrhythmias. An ECG Holter Monitor can offer important insights in the comfort of your own home.

Fitting Instructions

Completing Your Order

Once you’ve received your order confirmation, please allow up to 3 business days to receive the ambulatory ECG heart monitor. The device is sent via tracked 24 hour delivery. Please allow for delays around public holidays.

IMPORTANT: Fit Immediately

Fit the ambulatory ECG heart monitor as soon as possible. Do NOT place electrodes on sore or broken skin to avoid discomfort or inaccurate readings.

Why is Skin Prep Important?

Proper skin preparation ensures the best possible connection between your skin and the electrodes, providing clear, accurate readings. Without proper preparation, recordings may be inaccurate or unusable.

Preparation Steps

  1. Shave the Area (if needed): Ensure smooth skin for better adhesion.
  2. Clean with Alcohol Swab: Use the provided swab to clean the area, removing any oils or residue.
  3. Dry and Abrade with Gauze: Gently dry the area and use the gauze to lightly abrade the skin. This will ensure a clean, dry surface for electrode placement.

Positioning the Device

For Men
Place the device over the breastbone (sternum) for optimal recording.

For Women
Place the device so the lower “arms” are placed just below the breasts.

Alternative
Alternative position option if the primary position is uncomfortable.

Applying the Electrodes

  • Attach three electrodes to each connector on the device.
  • Carefully remove the adhesive backing and ensure each electrode sticks securely to the prepared skin area.
  • Ensure the small green line on the device faces upwards.

Continue Daily Activities

Carry on with your normal daily activities as much as possible to capture typical heart activity.

Avoid Certain Actions

Do not press directly on the centre of the electrode as the gel will be pushed out under the adhesive and the electrode may lose contact.

Do not bathe, shower, or swim while wearing the device, as it is not waterproof. When you need to shower or bathe, simply unclip the device and clip it back on after you are dry.

Avoid microwave ovens, electric blankets, and circulation boosters as they may interfere with recordings.

Do not scratch the electrodes attached to your chest.

Recording Symptoms

Use the patient diary provided to log any symptoms such as chest pain, dizziness, or palpitations.

Press the button briefly to mark any significant symptoms on the timeline (pressing the button briefly will not turn the monitor off).

Finishing the Recording

At the end of the monitoring period, press and hold the button for three seconds to turn off the device. Gently remove the device and dispose of the used electrodes in your regular waste.

Returning the Device

Place the device, along with your diary, into the return envelope provided and take it to your nearest Post Office counter. We’ll be automatically notified, and the package will be tracked – just make sure you keep the Proof of Postage receipt.

Aftercare

If mild irritation occurs, avoid scratching the area. If you experience a more severe irritation such as blistering, please remove the device and contact the Home Heart Check Team for further advice.
